What is a 'rehearsal band'?
Diffcult to know where the name came from but we think that it describes a band which rarely (or never) performs for an audience and is, therefore, always 'in rehearsal'.   'Big bands' are not economically viable, in the current musical climate, so rehearsal bands are usually formed from a group of enthusiasts who want to play a big-band repertoire.   They tend to be a bit 'clubby' but are generally friendly to newcomers except maybe the 3rd Trumpet who's had the chair for 15 years and still doesn't understand the difference between p and ff.   The players tend to be 'local' and your nearest Musicians Union representative can probably help in locating their whereabouts.   The playing standard is variable and some instruments are more in demand than others - new trombonists are usually embraced and bought a drink.
