LoHi

Wow!   Mark Nightingale has concocted a superb Latin American big-band romp just for you!   Is 'Carnifest!' a protein-fuelled, meat-eaters' blast or a wild Brazilian party combining a carnival and a festival?   Dunno, but either way, it's perfect as a rip-roaring, crowd-pleasing finish for your first set.   Mark says 'Its not that difficult' (all together, 'Yeah, OK for you').   There are no improvised solos but your lead brass may find themselves earning their interval Perrier.

The manuscript download has the usual 5 saxes, 4 trumpets and 4 trombones and percussion/melody guitar parts are added to the piano, bass and drums rhythm.   And, of course, there is a Conductor Score.   The composition is so new we haven't got an audio guide but, as soon as Mark has got his band into a recording studio again, we'll post the track to show you how it should be played.   The target metronome mark is minim=96 so don't play it too slowly and lose that excitement.   It's a chance for your drummer to cut loose and maybe you could buy your conductor a samba-whistle so that he can join in the fun!

News from Blueport Img © Mark Nightingale 2006.   Mark has appeared at international festivals alongside some of the 'greats' of jazz and been featured with artists as diverse as Frank Sinatra, Cleo Laine, London Brass, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Sting, Robbie Williams, Shakatak and the Spice Girls.   He is currently to be heard dividing his time between Cleo Laine and John Dankworth, the Charlie Watts Tentet, Stan Tracey's Ellingtonia, the Kenny Wheeler Big Band, the Alan Barnes Nonet and the Andy Panayi Quartet.

Throughout his career, Mark has been a prolific composer-arranger, receiving composing and arranging commissions from, among others, James Morrison, the BBC Radio Big Band, the Dankworth Generation Big Band and the Saga and Sony Playstation games organisations.   He has also produced a growing catalogue of popular educational studies and short pieces, published by Warwick Music, together with educational books and pieces for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

Marks's discography features his work with a number of bands and we've chosen his association with Andy Panayi in the small group context of their tribute to Gerry Mulligan.   You can access the source of the quartet's CD 'News From Blueport' by clicking on the image and you can download the full track of Mark's original 'Em 'n En' via the download tab on jazzorg's main menu.     Tell me more about Mark Nightingale
