Unweaving The Rainbow (Audio)
matt_roberts2_68This track is Matt Roberts’ second winning piece for the Dankworth Prize and features his big band talents.   He began his jazz career with the Durham Youth Band and got into composition and arranging during his time at Leeds College of Music.   'Unweaving the Rainbow' is his prize-winning entry in the big band category of the Worshipful Company of Musicians and Jazzorg 2010 Competition.   This recording is played by a band assembled by Matt for the recording and the piece was also premiered at Ronnie Scott's club in March 2010.   Click on the heading to get to a sample or go straight to the download for the full audio version at [this link]   This piece is a ‘how-to’ to accompany the manuscript download but it is also fine big band jazz in its own right played by some of the UK’s most talented young musicians.

Switch In Time
Another track from 'Nelson's Column' featuring the up-tempo, Sammy Nestico original 'Switch In Time'.   Sammy's composing and arranging reputation was established from the prolific output that he supplied to Count Basie and his material features in the pads of most 'rehearsal bands'.  This is big-band jazz at its best and you can download the full track of 'Switch In Time' at [this link] , hear a sample by clicking the heading and you can get to Sammy's website for his most recent compositions, by clicking on the image.

Blew Hughes
Nelson's Column a big band, which played at the eponymous pub, had a repertoire mainly of the Nestico writing, originally done for Count Basie.   The beautiful ballad 'Blew Hughes' features some excellent trumpet and alto.   Any details of the players and their current whereabouts would be useful....
